About this calculator
LVP is counted plank by plank because plank size decides the count: a 48 × 7 in plank covers 2.33 sq ft, a 36 × 6 in plank only 1.5. This calculator works from your plank dimensions and planks per box, with the 7–10% waste range LVP installs actually need.
What this number means
Luxury vinyl plank is counted plank by plank, because the plank size decides how much of each box you actually use. A 48 × 7 in plank covers 2.33 sq ft; a 36 × 6 in plank covers 1.5 sq ft — the same room needs far more of the smaller plank, and the offcut pattern changes with it. This calculator works from your plank dimensions, not a generic box-coverage figure, so the count matches the product you bought.
Waste for LVP runs 7–10%: the low end for a clean straight lay, the high end for staggered joints, doorways and angles. Click-lock LVP also needs a 1/4 in expansion gap at the walls, and most products need the subfloor flat to within 3/16 in over 10 ft — a lumpy subfloor telegraphs through vinyl faster than through laminate.
The formula
- Area = Length × Width
- Plank area = Plank length (in) × Plank width (in) ÷ 144
- Area with waste = Area × (1 + waste %)
- Planks = Area with waste ÷ Plank area, rounded up
- Boxes = Planks ÷ Planks per box, rounded up
Worked example
A 15 × 12 ft bedroom in 48 × 7 in planks, 10 per box, 10% waste.
- Area = 15 × 12 = 180 sq ft
- Plank area = 48 × 7 ÷ 144 = 2.333 sq ft
- With waste: 180 × 1.10 = 198 sq ft to buy for
- Planks: 198 ÷ 2.333 = 84.86 → 85 planks
- Boxes: 85 ÷ 10 = 8.5 → 9 boxes
Assumptions and limitations
- One rectangular room per calculation. For L-shaped rooms, total the rectangles first and run the total area.
- Plank dimensions and planks per box are your product figures, printed on the box — do not guess them.
- Waste 7% suits a clean straight lay; 10% suits staggered patterns, doorways and angled walls.
- Closets, fixed cabinets and islands inside the measured rectangle should be deducted from the area first.
- Underlayment is usually pre-attached on click-lock LVP; glue-down LVP needs adhesive by the gallon, which this calculator does not count.
Frequently asked questions
It depends on plank size. At 10% waste you buy for 220 sq ft: in 48 × 7 in planks (2.333 sq ft each) that is 95 planks; in 36 × 6 in planks (1.5 sq ft each) it is 147 planks. Enter your plank size to get the exact count.
Seven to ten percent: 7% for a clean straight lay in a plain rectangle, 10% for staggered joints, doorways, angles and closets. Diagonal lays want 12–15%.
Divide the plank count by the planks per box and round up — you cannot buy part of a box. A 180 sq ft room in 48 × 7 in planks at 10% waste needs 85 planks, or 9 boxes at 10 per box.
The core is the same — area plus waste, rounded up to whole boxes — but LVP is counted from plank dimensions because plank sizes vary widely, while laminate is usually ordered from the box-coverage figure printed on the box.
Usually no — most click-lock LVP carries pre-attached underlayment. Glue-down LVP needs adhesive instead, and any LVP over concrete benefits from a moisture barrier if the product does not include one.
Yes — waterproof LVP is one of the few hard-surface floors rated for full bathrooms. Seams still need to be tight, and standing water should not sit for days, but a properly installed waterproof LVP floor handles wet rooms far better than laminate or hardwood.
